In this passage Jesus tells us that Christians should not worry about material things. We know that no material thing is going to accompany us to heaven, so our focus must be on those things that concern our eternal future in heaven, not on those things that will parish. Jesus explains to us:
- THE NECESSARY PRACTICE! Jesus reminds us that our Sovereign God already knows all our needs, therefore, our focus is to be on His kingdom, not material goods. The way Matthew wrote this verse “seeking” means an unending pursuit that cannot be completed in this lifetime. Jesus is telling us seeking is not a casual, whenever-we-get-around-to-it kind of thing. Seeking God’s kingdom is to occupy our life! There is also
- THE NECESSARY PRIORITY! One source explains seeking first as coming before all others in time and order, foremost in importance. Jesus is not telling us seeking God’s kingdom is a top priority; He is telling us it is the only priority! When a person seeks God’s kingdom above all other pursuits on earth without any thought of stopping, God then makes it His business to see that all other “priorities” fall into place. With that in mind we can look at
- THE NECESSARY PURSUIT! This whole idea of seeking first is focused on finding the kingdom of God! If you read 1 Peter you’ll discover he teaches the same thing by saying a Christian’s new life in Christ is focused on their life in heaven, not here on earth. There is also the truth here that our seeking the kingdom of God is to lead us to God’s righteousness. God’s righteousness is His nature and character in always doing the right thing at exactly the right time in the right way. For us seeking such righteousness means we always obey all God says! When we seek first, with no intent of stopping our seeking after God’s righteousness, then we are recipients of
- THE NECESSARY PROSPERITY! We find three truths here concerning Biblical wealth! First, true Biblical wealth is conditional. We do what God says, then He is free to bless us. Second, Biblical wealth is complete. Notice Jesus says God will add ALL to us. That is all of everything we need to live in harmony with God and His Word. Finally, true Biblical wealth is complimentary. Notice Jesus says all these things will be GIVEN to you. God never sells us anything. If He did He would not be a God of grace and redemption. The interesting thing about this whole idea of seeking first God’s kingdom and His righteousness is that ALL, or God’s free gifts to us are guaranteed! Find a financial institution that will guarantee you wealth that is greater than all you can imagine!! God’s invitation to be wealthy His way is open to all, and can be started at any time. It is however, best not to wait because we don’t know how many more days we have to contribute to our retirement!
